The Comeback Kid: Denim Jackets.

I can remember quite vividly my very first denim jacket - at least the first one that had any style at all.

It was from Abercrombie & Fitch - before they slapped 'Ezra Fitch' on everything the brand offered while still bumping up the price. It was a vintage washed denim jacket, with light deconstruction and amazing stitching and details. I wore that thing all through junior high well into high school - and you would have thought I was Karl Lagerfeld because the only think worn at my school were Carhartts and letterman jackets. Back then it was not as kosher to be sporting denim unless it was on your legs or had Wrangler written on it somewhere.

These days, however, it seems that jean jackets are making a resurgence - and in a big way. They were all over the runways at Fashion Week's around the world, and the trend is said to be around for a long while since the "American Heritage" look is once again popular (tall boots, plaid wovens, khaki pants). Even denim on denim is rearing its head again (but not in a crazy Britney Spears/Justin Timberlake way).

Now I don't expect OR suggest anyone to go out and purchase a $500+ jean jacket if you haven't been versed in what you are diving into. Trust me - wearing something you are not used to is equivalent to jumping into a manual car when you have been driving an automatic. So here are a few more economical alternatives...

How To Get The Right Denim Jacket...

1. Nail Your Fit
Remember the torso of your jacket should hit you right at your waist. The armholes should cut a little higher and the sleeves should reach just below the wrist.

2. Wear It Out
When done well, new jackets and look like they have been around for a long time. However, AVOID over-done stone washes, ridiculous tints, or ripped too much.

3. All Tied Up
It is now completely acceptable to wear a jeans jacket to the office - especially if you do it right. A classic light-blue button up shirt, muted patterned skinny tie, and dark washed denim jacket matched with a pair of light brown dress pants makes for an all-american office look.
